Why Fort Campbell retirees look hard at CRSC

Fort Campbell sits on the Kentucky and Tennessee line, and most of the post is on the Tennessee side next to Clarksville. It is home to the 101st Airborne Division, the 5th Special Forces Group and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. A lot of the retirees who stay in Montgomery and Christian Counties spent careers in air assault, rotary-wing aviation and special operations, with repeated deployments in between.

That history matters for CRSC because the program does not pay on a diagnosis. It pays on a VA-rated condition that your branch finds was caused in a combat-related way. For this community the fact patterns we most often look at are rappelling and fast-rope injuries, helicopter hard landings, parachute and air assault training injuries, blast exposure on deployment, and noise from aircraft and weapons. Some of those can fit hazardous duty, some fit instrumentality of war, and some fit training that simulates war. Others do not fit any category, and it is better to know that before you file.

What CRSC is, in one paragraph

Combat-Related Special Compensation is a tax-free monthly payment under 10 U.S.C. § 1413a for eligible military retirees whose retired pay is reduced by the VA waiver. Your VA rating is the starting point. Your branch then decides, condition by condition, whether each rated disability came from armed conflict, hazardous service, duty under conditions simulating war, an instrumentality of war, or a Purple Heart injury. The board decides from documents, so the packet has to show how and where the injury happened, not just that it exists. Read more on CRSC eligibility.

Which board decides your claim

Most Fort Campbell retirees are Army, so their CRSC claim goes to the Army's CRSC branch at Human Resources Command. Air Force retirees file with the Air Force Personnel Center. Navy and Marine Corps retirees who settled in Clarksville file with the Navy's CRSC board. We build the packet to the board that will read it. See our Army CRSC guide for how the Army reviews claims.

Local resources worth knowing

We are not the only help in the area, and we would rather you use every resource you have. The installation's Retirement Services Office is the place for retired pay and Survivor Benefit Plan questions. VA medical facilities and community clinics serve Clarksville and the surrounding counties for care and records. County veterans service officers and accredited Veterans Service Organizations can help with VA disability claims, which is work we do not do. DFAS handles the payment side once a CRSC decision is made. Our job is narrower: building the CRSC packet itself.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to live near Fort Campbell to work with Standfast?

No. Standfast is 100% remote and works with retirees nationwide. Clarksville and Fort Campbell retirees work with us the same way everyone else does, by phone, email and secure upload.

Can air assault or rappelling injuries qualify for CRSC?

They can, when the records document the event and tie it to a qualifying category such as hazardous service or training that simulates war. A VA rating alone is not enough. The board looks for time-of-service records showing how the injury happened. No one can promise a particular decision.

Is Standfast part of Fort Campbell, the VA or the Army?

No. Standfast Veterans Group is a private, veteran-owned company. We are not affiliated with the VA, the Department of Defense, DFAS, Human Resources Command or any branch of service, and we are not a law firm or a Veterans Service Organization.

How much does Standfast charge?

A flat fee quoted up front after your free review. We never take a percentage of your CRSC back pay or monthly payment. Payment plans available through Affirm or Klarna at checkout, subject to approval. See what packet preparation costs.
